Withdrawal symptoms and a broken spacebar

Yay! My first novel is now available on Kindle (early e-book release). Yes, I am excited. But I realize I have my work cut out for me. My publisher is a very small press, and I am not famous or popular by any means, so If I want to get the word out, I am going to have to hustle. So I have been researching, taking notes, talking to friendly fellow authors (thank you Mike Lynch for your pearls of wisdom) and formulating a plan of attack. This is in addition to all my other chores, tasks and jobs I need to get done this month. One thing I have not been doing, though, is writing. And I am not happy about it.

I quit smoking many years ago, and it was one of the best things I have ever done. But breaking free of the habit was tough. It was all I could think about. I could not picture my morning coffee, lunchtime beverage, or my bedtime reading session without a cigarette in my hand. It was irritating, and I felt lost.  I am feeling much the same way right now.

So am I addicted to writing? I don't know. I share very few of my works with others (although I plan to change that) and I get shy when I begin to talk about my book. So if I am afraid to share and let the world see what I have done, why do I prefer to spend my evenings in front of this terrible keyboard that skips my v's half of the time and periodically  decides to quit spacing my words? I tried replacing the keyboard twice and I keep returning to this...thing.  Don't ask why. I'm just trying to figure out why the darn thing has become so rickety and unreliable.

I suppose it doesn't matter. I can still get a blog update done (32 corrections so far). And it is a way of sneaking in some writing. Now let's see how long before my next update.

  1. I just want to say congratulations on your first book being released! You must be so excited but nervous. I can't imagine! I'm a new blogger! I've only had my blog for 2 months. I do YA book reviews, so I hope you'll swing by my blog and check it out! I was looking into your book and I'm highly intrigued!
I noticed that the release date says February 2011. My birthday is February 6th so if it will be out then, maybe I can gift it to myself. I find that I love some of the first (if not the first) books that authors have published. Often times, it's some of their best work!
Sorry about my super long comment! I'm a new blogger but, if you ever have questions, I'll be glad to help in anyway that I can!

  2. You have no idea how exciting it is to hear from you. I am thrilled to hear you are interested in my book. The publisher is working hard to release the print version as soon as possible, but unfortunately they are not ready to give me an official release date. They are shooting for February, though. Right now the book is only available on Kindle. I will keep you posted as I find out more.

Thank you for reaching out. It means a lot to me. Good luck with your blog, and happy birthday!

  3. I am very interested in your book! So, I'm hoping that you'll keep me updated on a specific release date when the publisher finally lets you know! I wish I had a Kindle! I would have bought it last night to read!

I'll be keeping an eye out for all your posts on here and GoodReads and watching for that release date! OH, and good luck with your blog too! Thank you so much! : )

  4. Thank you! I really want you to read the book. Your blog is amazing; I want you to post a review for Familiar Origins. I don't know if you like reading from your monitor, but you can download the Kindle reader software on your PC for free through Amazon.com. I can't wait to hear what you think. But don't worry, I will keep you updated on the print release.

  5. I'm jealous that people already read Familiar Origins and posted reviews! But the few I read they said it was incredible so now I'm even more excited to read it! I don't think I could read a whole book on my computer...although I'm contemplating it. I hope they release it soon so I can buy it and read it!
And thank you so much for the compliment about my blog! : )
    I'm anxiously waiting!
